Last year was certainly one of the most challenging
we have encountered from a weather perspective.
The rainfall was relentless, which seriously affected many of our key business
sectors. Construction contracts were signi昀椀cantly impeded, and the farming
community were almost brought to a standstill during the early part of the year.
Despite this, we continued to work tirelessly and ended the year far more
positively than was initially thought. Looking forward to this year, many of the
large infrastructure projects which were due to start midway through 2025 appear
to be stalling and are likely to push back into 2026.
On the 3rd June we received the great news that our joint venture business
KPL, were successful in their bid to secure £24.2million of Grant Funding from
Highland and Islands Enterprise. This signi昀椀cant level of support will go towards
the dry dock extension and expansion of the lay down area at Kishorn. This will
allow for longer vessels up to 260m in length to use the dry dock and the creation
of 9 hectares of additional reclaimed land from the loch. Our ultimate vision is to
become a manufacturing hub for offshore wind, and you can see what that looks
like if you scan the QR Code at the foot of this page.
I am also pleased to announce that we took a majority shareholding in
MacDonald Groundworks Ltd (MGL) in October of last year. MGL are based
at Lairgandour just south of Inverness on the opposite side of the A9 to our
Midlairgs Quarry. Specialising in bulk earthworks, infrastructure services and
aggregate production, MGL has strengthened our Contracting division allowing
us to target larger civil engineering projects. We extend our welcome of the MGL
Team to the Leiths Group and look forward to a successful working partnership
for years to come.
As we look to the future, our focus remains on our most valuable asset, our
people. Succession planning and attracting the next generation into our business
is key to the ongoing success of Leiths. Thanks to our team, who have attended
many of the School Career Fairs and to those who participated in the ‘Build Your
Future’ 昀椀nals here in Aberdeen. I was delighted when we were shortlisted as a
昀椀nalist in the Northern Star Business Awards 2025 for ‘Inspiring Futures’ which
further demonstrates our 昀椀rm commitment to investing in young workers.
I hope you all enjoy reading this latest edition and see from the
many informative articles just how much of a diverse and vibrant
company we are. Thank you all for your continued commitment
and support.
