FYFE GLENROCK
Earlier this year, Fyfe Glenrock supplied a Peterhead
Granite Urn to Taylor Pearce in London
The Urns are centrepieces in drinking fountains and are replacements for
ones that have been broken or damaged. The team at Fyfe Glenrock have
now made five Urns for the same client over the years, all for fountains in
and around London, including for The Natural History Museum, and the
latest being for a fountain in Baker Street.
The Urns are made from red Peterhead granite from Stirlinghill or
Longhaven quarries. The initial challenge is obtaining a suitable
dimensional block with no inherent flaws, fractures, or fissures. The
granite is cut on a wire saw and, when a suitable yield is obtained, a
secondary cut is performed using overhead bridge saws, taking the
stone into a rough outline shape. From there, the block is cut to the final
dimensions and moulded on the five axis CNC machine. The Urn is then
hand polished to a mirror finish and the internal bowl ground out by
hand by our Master Mason.

Although we didn’t go on to win the award, we are proud of our innovative
product. The unique qualities of this limestone deposit and the recently
upgraded milling plant has enabled us to produce a limestone powder that
can be used to replace the cement content within concrete by up to 20%.
